While some readers may recognize "Scratch" as MIT's open source kids' programming language, it is actually the name of a dated audio mixer by developer AnalogX.

The first thing you need to know about Scratch is that it is extremely dated. As a matter of fact, you need Windows 98 or less to run it. If you are an old computer hobbyist or someone who enjoys preserving legacy programs, you may be interested in this. Other than that, any consumer looking into this product should likely turn to newer alternatives.

Nonetheless, for its time, Scratch was an amazing program. Windows Audio by default had very few mixing features, and this ensured that users could take full advantage of their music. While Windows has developed more modern audio features now, Scratch still has some cool options. Users can adjust volume and speed. They can put multiple audio files together and even use a turntable simulator. The program is essentially a free version of an older DJ turntable. Everything mixed can be easily recorded (albeit in the failed .wma format or the older .wav format) and replayed later.

Finally, Scratch is a nifty tool that is fun for collectors and DJs who want to try everything. For the average person, Scratch will not even work on their computer. It may be fun to try on a boring weekend, but there are better options out there.
